Getting Pregnant

The earlier you know you’re pregnant, the sooner you can see your doctor to start prenatal care and make sure your eating, drinking, and other habits are as healthy as possible. Though some of today’s home pregnancy tests allow you to start testing super-early (as soon as 10 days after you ovulate), you’ll get the most accurate results if you wait until the day you expect to get your period.
Home pregnancy tests work by detecting levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your urine. Levels of this hormone, produced by the placenta, continue to rise in early pregnancy. Tests marketed as “early results” or “early response” may be more sensitive at detecting lower levels of hCG earlier.

Baby Birth

The baby’s gut (digestive system) now contains meconium — the sticky, green substance that will form your baby’s first poo after birth. It may include bits of the lanugo (fine hair) that covered your baby earlier in pregnancy. If your baby does a poo during labour, which can sometimes happen, the amniotic fluid will contain meconium. If this is the case, your midwife will want to monitor your baby closely as it could mean they are stressed.

Your First Scan

An early scan is offered from six weeks, so before your dating scan. Your midwife or GP will only recommend an early scan if there’s a concern, for example, if you’ve had bleeding in this pregnancy. Your GP may also refer you for a scan if you’ve had a previous miscarriage.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy symptoms at 4 weeks. Normally you get your period about 4 weeks from the start of your last period, but if you’re pregnant, the clearest sign at this point is a missed period. Many women still feel fine at 4 weeks, but others may notice sore breasts, fatigue, frequent urination, and nausea.

Feeding Baby

Frequent feedings also will help stimulate your milk production during the first few weeks. By 1 to 2 months of age, a breastfed baby will probably nurse 7-9 times a day. Before your milk supply is established, breastfeeding should be “on demand” (when your baby is hungry), which is generally every 1½ to 3 hours.
